This is the first of 3 videos starting with the climate crisis explained by a general practitioner, going into more detail about the climate crisis in general practice and the NHS. Climate change explained by a doctor - hopefully informative but also, hopefully, mildly entertaining. Let's try to stop climate change in the NHS and talk about sustainability in primary care.

1. Greenhouse Gases

The sun warms the earth and the Earth gives that heat back into space in the form of infrared radiation. To get out, that heat needs to pass through our atmosphere. But our atmosphere is becoming really congested with what are called greenhouse gases and they are stopping that heat from leaving our planet. The most common greenhouse gases are carbon dioxide, and the other ones are methane, nitrous oxide and F gases (that are found in metered dose inhalers for instance).

2. Global Consequences

Droughts
Wildfires
Floods
Extreme Weather

3. Where Can I Start?

a) Rethink Commuting
b) Rethink Consumption
c) Rethink Food / Meat

4. The NHS Carbon Footprint Target

• For the emissions we control directly (the NHS Carbon Footprint), we will reach net zero by 2040, with an ambition to reach an 80% reduction by 2028 to 2032;
• For the emissions we can influence (our NHS Carbon Footprint Plus), we will reach net zero by 2045, with an ambition to reach an 80% reduction by 2036 to 2039.
